CREATING A POSITIVE AND DYNAMIC BOARD GOVERNANCE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH BEST PRACTICES AND APPRECIATIVE STRATEGIC PLANNING

SITUATION
Hearing about the quality of our work and our positive strength based approach to organizational performance improvement, The Executive Director of a senior citizens housing facility with over 300 living units for low income seniors asked for our help in strengthening the board-executive director governance of the corporation. The chairman of the board was interested in fostering a more positive way of communicating and interacting with the board and having the board discuss and determine strategic priorities for the next five year horizon.

APPROACH
In collaboration with the Executive Director and Deputy Director we designed a one day appreciative inquiry strategic planning workshop that:

  • Focused the board and executive team’s dialogue on best practices for positive, dynamic organizational governance.
  • Re-affirmed the corporation’s core values and mission.
  • Developed strategic priorities and action steps to guide the organization over the next five years.

RESULT
From the workshop we delivered a strategic planning report that set forth the action plan to guide the strategic direction of the organization for the next five years.
